Daily News - Friday, April 13th

So much for bad luck on Friday the 13th. We had an AMAZING Read-a-Thon today!! Not only did we raise an incredible amount of money ($581.50!!! )for such a worthy cause, we shattered our class goal for number of books read all together (our goal was 150 and we ended up reading 452!!!).

Students spent all morning at a variety of stations, reading a variety of texts! They spent time cozied up in a tent reading self selected books, they spent time in "Poet's Paradise" doing some buddy ready with poetry, they carefully followed a recipe at "Baker's Delight" in order to make some VERY tasty spider cookies, they enjoyed books online, and each group rehearsed and performed a play! Needless to say Ms. MacDonald and I were both so very proud of this group of children. They were so responsible, inclusive, and kind throughout the whole morning. It was such a pleasure to take it all in. We also took many pictures and are hoping to share them on the blog over the weekend, so stay tuned!! Thanks again to everyone who participated!!!

For anyone who is interested, we used "Tumblebooks" to listen and read along with stories online. There is a free link to this website through the provincial libraries. Here is the link if you want to check it out at home:

Remember to READ over the weekend folks! And grade 4 students need to finish up their division question sheets for Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Daily News - Wednesday, April 11th

We are gearing up for the Read-a-Thon! Pledges are coming in and thoughts of reading are dancing in the children's heads! Ms. MacDonald and I are very excited about the variety of stations the children will do during the morning. As you may know, one of those stations is a Reader's Theatre station. Students were split into their groups today, and they all chose parts. If there is anything at home that they could use for costumes or props, please send it to the school with your child. These costumes and props are just for fun, please don't purchase anything new :) Students are also encouraged to come in their pj's and to bring pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals - anything that will make for a cozy reading area!

We have also been working on division in grade 4 math. The past few days we have focused on long division. It is just an introduction in grade 4, but if you are able to do some extra problems with your child at home, that would be a great way to support their learning.

Enjoy another wonderful, sunny evening!

Daily News - Thursday, April 5th

We had a wonderful day today filled with Easter treats. Thanks to Mrs. Vaive and the Student Council, everyone enjoyed a huge, outdoor egg hunt today! It was lots of fun! Also a huge thank you to Cathy Shaw for the treat bags for the students!

I would like to remind everyone that due to the short week, we will have our Word Study test on Tuesday. Written sorts can be done over the weekend, and I will collect notebooks on Tuesday. Also, we will NOT have a new Word Study next week.

Also, any students who have not finished their Reading Response Letters, they are due on Tuesday as well.

I would like to wish everyone a very happy long weekend! Enjoy the extra time with family!

Daily News - Wednesday, April 4th

Hi everyone,

Our class will be participating in the Read-a-Thon fundraiser for the Easter Seals Campaign this year. Notices with information and pledge sheets went home today. This has previously been something the younger grades have done, but we thought we would make it the biggest and best one yet! On April 13th, students in the K-4 classes will all dedicate their morning to reading! Students are encouraged to collect pledges or donations from family and friends over the next week. Luke Gaudet, this year's Easter Seals Ambassador, will be at our school on April 19th and we will present him with the money then. It is a wonderful way to support a very worthy cause. Pledge sheets and money will be collected on or before next Friday, April 13th.

Word Study News! Since we do not have school this Friday we will have our Word Study test on Tuesday when we get back. Students can do their Written Sort over the weekend. Therefore, we also will NOT have Word Study next week as it is also a short week.

Tonight's homework:

Both:
  1. Read
  2. Collect pledges/donations for Easter Seals
Grade 4:
  1. Word Study - Word Hunt - Record in HW log
Have a great evening!

Some Things We're Proud Of!

Hi everyone! Recently I have finally gotten around to photographing some things we've been working on in grade 3/4, and thought it would be nice to share it with you. Enjoy :)

The classroom library. A cozy corner to enjoy a good book!

The Biomes projects. The grade 4's spent a lot of time researching Biomes, and wrote
Descriptive Reports about 1 particular one. The final products turned out beautifully!

"Owen and Mzee" became a class favourite! A story about 2 very unlikely friends, and the importance of never giving up! Grade 4 students painted the mural, came up with the themes that presented themselves in the story, and created their own personal response to the book!

The grade 3's did a unit on Plants in science. They created these lovely wheels to display their knowledge of the life cycle of a plant! They are lovely and bright in the hallway, and make us all look forward to the blooming buds in spring!
