Daily News - Monday, March 26th

Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had a relaxing and rejuvinating holiday! I know I did! I got to spend a lot of time with my daughter Maya, and enjoyed every moment :)

It is a busy time ahead. In LA, the grade 4's will continue to focus on comprehension strategies during independent reading and guided reading. I will be modeling "Making Connections" during read alouds in the coming weeks. Expert readers connect to the text they read. When a reader relates to the characters, story, pictures or feelings that occur in a book, it allows them to delve deeper and have a better understanding. Students will be expected to share their own connections during activities as well as in their reading response letters. Continuing to notice their own Self Monitoring skills while reading is also important.

In writing, we are starting a new unit on Retells. We will read books together that will serve as examples of retells and will highlight the important features of a retell. We will be creating some special retells of our own!

In math, I am hoping to finish up the division part of the unit the next 2 weeks. We will be working on dividing 2 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers, and will be working with remainders. It would be very helpful if you ask your children real life division questions when they arise (sharing cookies, figuring out amounts at the grocery store, money, etc.).

We will also be starting a Health unit this week. Our focus will be on our overall health including physical, emotional and social wellness.

The grade 3's are finishing up their Plant unit in science this week. We have read many books, done experiments, watched videos and had discussions. There will be a short quiz at the end of the week to wrap it all up and then we will moving on to our next science unit on Stability.

Last, but not least - we will be doing Scholastic Book Orders on a monthly basis until the end of the year. This is a great opportunity to order books at reasonable prices. I sent home the March order forms today, and they are due back by Wednesday, March 28th as I need to place the order at the end of this week.

Here is today's homework:

Both:
  1. Read
  2. Book orders DUE Wednesday
